Commodity Markets React to Escalating Middle East Tensions

Commodity Markets13 July 2026

Commodity markets are being driven primarily by renewed geopolitical tensions following the latest escalation in the US-Iran conflict surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. Developments in the region have had immediate implications across energy, precious metals, industrial metals, and agricultural commodities.

Energy markets responded sharply as US military strikes on Iranian targets pushed both Brent and WTI crude prices significantly higher amid concerns over potential supply disruptions through one of the world's most important oil transportation routes. In response to the heightened risks, the UAE's ADNOC is expanding options for customers to load crude outside the Strait of Hormuz through alternative ship-to-ship transfers, reflecting operational adjustments to the evolving geopolitical environment.

Natural gas has also strengthened alongside the broader energy complex, while China's crude imports are expected to recover after several months of weaker demand. Higher refinery utilization, relaxed fuel export restrictions, and expectations for renewed strategic stockpiling later this year are contributing to a more constructive demand outlook.

In contrast, precious metals have come under pressure despite the geopolitical backdrop. Gold and silver have both declined as rising oil prices strengthen inflation expectations, support the US Dollar, and push real yields higher—conditions that historically create headwinds for non-yielding assets such as bullion. As a result, major European precious metal mining companies are also expected to face pressure.

Industrial metals have weakened as investors assess the potential impact of higher energy costs on global manufacturing activity and economic growth. Copper, aluminum, zinc, and nickel have all declined, reflecting concerns that a prolonged disruption in the Strait of Hormuz would simultaneously increase production costs while slowing industrial demand.

Palm oil has been one of the few exceptions within the commodity complex, benefiting from stronger Malaysian export data and higher crude oil prices that improve the outlook for biofuel demand.

The Strait of Hormuz remains the central factor influencing commodity markets. Any prolonged disruption would have far-reaching implications for global energy supplies, transportation costs, fertilizer production, and agricultural input prices. The current environment continues to support energy and certain agricultural commodities while creating a more challenging backdrop for industrial and precious metals, reinforcing broader inflationary pressures across global markets.
