Markets Hold Steady Ahead of Key Federal Reserve Decision

Currency Markets30 July 2026

Foreign exchange markets traded within relatively narrow ranges as investors adopted a cautious stance ahead of the Federal Reserve's policy decision, while continuing to monitor global monetary policy expectations and regional economic developments.

The US Dollar softened modestly for a third consecutive session, with market participants increasingly focused on the uncertainty surrounding the Federal Reserve meeting. While most economists expect policymakers to leave interest rates unchanged, significant positioning within futures markets reflects expectations that the outcome remains finely balanced. Market indicators also suggest that several traditional drivers—including interest rates, trade dynamics, and equity performance—may become less supportive of the Dollar over the coming months.

The euro remained stable against the Dollar, continuing to hold above key technical support levels established earlier this month. Large options positions due to expire over the coming days may influence near-term price action, while investors continue to assess the broader outlook for the single currency.

Sterling also remained resilient, consolidating after its strong performance earlier in the month. Expectations that the incoming UK government will adopt market-friendly fiscal policies have continued to support the Pound, while the EUR/GBP exchange rate remains near the lower end of its recent trading range.

The Japanese Yen remains under sustained structural pressure. Despite modest gains during the session as investors reduced risk exposure following weakness in Asian equity markets, speculative positioning against the Yen remains at its highest level in many years. Investors continue to monitor upcoming Bank of Japan communications, fiscal policy announcements, and any potential intervention by Japanese authorities aimed at supporting the currency.

Across the broader Asian region, the Chinese Yuan remained stable as the People's Bank of China continued to manage the pace of appreciation through its daily currency fixing. The South Korean Won strengthened further, supported by exporter-related Dollar conversions and expectations of additional capital repatriation, making it one of the strongest-performing emerging market currencies this month. In contrast, the Indonesian Rupiah remained under pressure amid renewed efforts by the country's central bank to stabilize the currency following recent leadership changes.

Overall, currency markets remain focused on central bank policy decisions, positioning within interest rate markets, and regional policy developments. The Federal Reserve's guidance, together with upcoming decisions from the Bank of Japan, will continue to shape global foreign exchange markets in the weeks ahead.
